The Director of Equipment R&D manages and directs engineering activities of equipment-related products for the company. The priorities for this position include strategic planning, product design, product development, product manufacturing, quality assurance and problem resolution. Closely work with Sales/Marketing, Manufacturing and QA to provide value and competitivity to customers through quality products and services.
Provide leadership to the R&D team and production team in each (equipment) product line, from the product initiation, specification, design, development, prototyping, testing, qualification, manufacturing transfer, production process, cost control, inventory control, manufacturing capacity, on-time delivery, up to documentations.
Closely follow current industry trends to ensure that the company maintains and expands its technology leadership position. Based on market needs, develop strategic planning for existing product improvement and model upgrade, as well as establishing new product lines.
Assure that new products are designed meeting or exceeding the requirements of user’s applications.
Work with sales to support customer’s special requirements, from minor custom changes to major OEM projects, including product specifications, engineering approach, cost, timeline, etc. Sometimes may need to communicate directly with customers for detailed technical support.
Oversee issues in the R&D loop (regarding engineering approach, personnel, timing, budget, etc.) and in the production loop (regarding engineering issues, quality control, supply chain, production capacity, etc.). When problem happens, timely find resolution and implement immediate actions.
Arrange internal and external (outsourcing) resources to meet project commitments. Assure achieving objectives and project completion within budget and time frame.
Encourage inventions and intellectual property protection efforts through trademarks, patents or publications. On the other hand, keep the engineering team informed of competitor patenting status relative to our current or future product and process.
Formulate objectives and standards of performance for the department. Monitor team member’s work load, work efficiency and work quality. Provide supports with engineering guidance and necessary tools, and encourage workers taking initiatives.
Responsible for department hiring, retention, and performance management.
Ensure product compliance with industry standard (e.g. IEC standards, Safety standards, CE marking, etc.), with US national security rules (e.g. ITAR, CCL, etc), and with environmental regulations (e.g. ROHS, REACH, WEEE, etc.)

MS or PhD degree in EE, Applied Physics, or related discipline; PhD preferred

7-10 plus years of senior supervisory experience to include directing technical staff (Optical, Mechanical, Electrical, and Firmware engineers).
Understanding of high-tech manufacturing environment with strong focus on product specifications and quality.
Excellent organizational skills, attention to details and ability to communicate effectively at all levels of an organization.
Strong functional and organizational management skills. Prior experience with direct oversight or line management of teams
Proven experience in developing and managing project schedules, budgets, measuring, reporting and achieving engineering metrics and managing department and project expenses, resource allocation and administration.
Experience outsourcing and managing product development to contractors and solution suppliers in the global market place.
Authorized to work in the US.
