Montana Instruments specializes in cryogenic optical platforms for academic and industrial research, located in Bozeman, Montana.
We are seeking a field support scientist to expand our field support capacity for existing systems as well as two upcoming product lines that are currently in the R&D phase.
The person in this role will be a part of the service team which involves supporting customers by answering technical inquiries via phone and email, as well as traveling to customer labs domestically and internationally. Travel will be up to 30%. This is a customer-facing position.
This person will be the lead service engineer/scientist on two upcoming product lines. The ideal candidate should have experience in either scanning probe microscopy or advanced spectroscopic techniques (e.g. Raman, IR, THz, etc.). Experience in either area (not necessarily both) would be adequate for consideration. Also, that experience need not be cryogenic. Scanning probe or advanced spectroscopy experience will be weighted equally. This is not a product manager position, however, there is upward mobility from within either product line.
The person in this position must be able to repair or update equipment in customer labs or back at the factory. Must be skilled in communication, interaction with others, must problems solve well, be able to explain technical details with clarity, and write technically.
This position also involves gathering feedback and conveying to relevant teams, therefore must be able to work very well cross-departmentally. Having a general curiosity and understanding for customer applications is a must. This position requires writing of technical documentation.
The person in this position will become a strong expert in the fields for which our instrumentation is used. As such, application support for our customers and prospective customers will be a central role. A passion for the cutting-edge science that our customers will be doing with our tools and assisting them with their applications will hopefully be one of several strong motivating factors for applying for this position.
We are posting this position because we need someone to solve a problem for us, which is field support for our newer product lines. Ideally your cover letter should tell us how you’re going to help us with solving the tasks inherent to the position, as they are described above. Please avoid a cover letter that is a generic re-packaging of the resume or boasting about accomplishments not relevant to the position. We will see your accomplishments in your resume.
Masters or PhD in Physics, Chemistry, Biology, ME, EE, or other hard sciences; Bachelor’s degree holders with pertinent high levels of experience would also be considered.
Candidates must have experience with either scanning probe or advanced far-field spectroscopic techniques (though not necessarily both).
2-4 years of experience preferred (or postdoc); exceptional candidates out of school may be considered
Ability to learn, implement, and execute cryogenic system updating, troubleshooting, assembly
Hands-on problem solving, at times in high pressure environments
Excellent communication, interpersonal, and active listening skills
Display technical understanding of scientific instrumentation
Attention to detail
