As Sr. Optical Designer you will apply your optical knowledge to design high performance illumination systems for biomedical and industrial applications. The Sr. Optical Designer works with a cross functional product development team to design and prototype optical systems as well as analyze and test design concepts. You will apply both theoretical and practical knowledge of optical systems, lasers, LEDs, and detector technologies to evaluate the feasibility of advanced concepts, design prototype systems and bring new products to market. The role demands a passion for innovation, confidence to take on challenging problems and attention to detail to reduce high level specifications into high quality design.
What you will do…
Design, test and optimize optical systems consisting of optical components, LED arrays, lasers and optical detectors for illumination applications.
Assemble and test optical prototypes, plan and execute experiments, analyze data and generate reports & presentations to summarize design concepts and results.
Research and evaluate new technologies, innovative optical design concepts, and components for the next generation products.
Provide input on emerging technologies that could open up new markets or applications.
Understand overall customer product requirements and how they relate to optical design
Review and provide feedback on new product specifications as well as feasibility of custom solutions.
Provide technical leadership to team members and other departments in the area of optics and optical design. Act as technical liaison between customers and suppliers on all matters related to optical disciplines, as they relate to the design and development process.
Perform risk analyses for optical components and systems and lead optical DFMEA activities. Support the quality and regulatory processes for ISO13485 and FDA compliance.
Provide technical support to Group Leader –Optical Design and perform other miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Education, skills, and experience you will need…
Bachelor’s degree in Physics or Engineering with post graduate studies in Applied Optics or Optical Engineering
10 years’ practical experience in advanced optical design with knowledge of lamps, LED and laser sources as well as optical detection methods.
Solid background designing, modeling, prototyping and testing optical systems.
Proficiency in the use of advanced modeling software (LightTools or Zemax).
Resourceful problem solver who is able to work around technical obstacles and will be adept at the implementation of practical solutions.
Excellent organizational skills, including the ability to efficiently evaluate, prioritize and handle multiple and changing projects and priorities.
Excellent verbal and written communication skills and the ability to interpret and summarize scientific results in a clear, concise, accurate manner.
Self-starter with excellent attitude, initiative and passion for delivering the best.
