The University of Minnesota has launched a major initiative to establish a Medical Discovery Team (MDT) in Optical Imaging and Brain Science. The team includes several newly hired tenure-track faculty members who have experience in multi-photon microscopy. They are focused on the development, advancement and application of cutting edge, innovative technologies, for imaging neuronal activity across multiple spatial scales. UMN is seeking a highly talented Opto-Mechanical Engineer to work directly with this team of researchers in the development and refinement of novel technologies. Typical instruments will be microscopes comprised of ultrafast lasers and a wide range of custom designed optical, electro-mechanical, electro-optical, and acousto-optical components. The Opto-Mechanical Engineer will be responsible for task and project level activities, including the design, testing, integration, and maintenance of new optical modules that expand the capabilities of our existing systems to probe brain function. We seek someone who is ready to work collaboratively with our researchers, industry partners, and suppliers to deliver solutions to technical challenges. This team is an expansion of the Center for Magnetic Resonance Research and the Opto-Mechanical Engineer will have as colleagues an exciting group of engineers and physicists designing advanced MR instrumentation.
Meet regularly with members of the MDT to discuss, prioritize and review tasks.
Align and maintain optical systems. These include femtosecond pulsed laser sources, non-collinear optical parametric amplifiers, deformable mirrors and spatial light modulators, beam shaping and steering, pre-chirp compensation optics, filters and mirrors for long wavelength laser transmission.
Based on existing designs, assemble and optimize wide-field and other custom multi-photon microscopes.
Create optomechanical designs using 3D CAD modeling software packages such as Autodesk Inventor.
Perform optical designs and simulations in software such as ZEMAX.
Characterize the performance of commercial and custom optical systems.
Clearly explain design concepts, theory of operation, and instructions to researchers in the biological sciences.
Add custom and commercial opto-mechanical features to existing systems.
Write and edit code in scientific computing software (e.g. MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW, ScanImage).
Advise researchers on the purchase of commercial optical components and equipment.
MS or PhD degree in Mechanical Engineering, Physics, Optics or Optical engineering. Additional skills include:
Strong technical aptitude in optical and mechanical engineering theory, principles, and practice.
Ability to align and maintain complicated optical systems.
Ability to perform optical designs and simulations in appropriate software such as ZEMAX.
Ability to create optomechanical designs using 3D CAD modeling software packages such as Autodesk Inventor.
Knowledge and understanding of fabrication techniques relevant to opto-mechanical engineering.
Ability to explain design concepts, theory of operation, and instructions to researchers in the biological sciences.
Ability to prioritize multiple project tasks and work on projects for more than one research group.
Excellent communication, verbal, and written skills.
Three years of hands-on experience in photonics
Familiarity with the principles of nonlinear optics
Familiarity with the use of spatial light modulators for beam shaping and/or holography
Comfort with the operation and tuning of commercial ultrafast laser systems (e.g., optical parametric amplifiers).
Knowledge of electro-optical and acousto-optical systems (e.g., electro-optical deflectors, Pockels Cells)
Knowledge of electro-mechanical systems: servos, piezoelectric devices, position feedback devices
Familiarity with scientific computing and automation software (e.g. MATLAB, Python, LabVIEW)
