The NRC’s Postdoctoral Fellowship program offers PDFs access to unique world-class facilities and the opportunity to work alongside multi-disciplinary teams of expert researchers and technicians on projects of critical importance to Canada. PDFs will carry out research on innovative research projects, with opportunities for career development (publications and/or industry interaction).
PDFs will be offered appointments to the staff of the National Research Council on a term basis and will be offered salaries and benefits currently available to Research Officers. Salaries commensurate with experience are taxable and subject to other deductions. As a guide, the current annual PhD recruiting rate is $64,437. In addition PDFs will be allocated a travel fund to support their work.
Integrated photonics is a rapidly expanding technology that enables the global communication network, and also penetrates into other applications such as medical diagnostics, sensors for the manufacturing, aviation and automotive industries, and even astrophysics instrumentation. The current approach to photonic component design is fundamentally limited by human knowledge, and is constrained by computationally expensive and time consuming numerical simulations.
A recently established collaboration between computer and photonics scientists at NRC aims to transform the traditional photonic design and discovery cycle through the use of artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) methods. We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow (PDF) with a keen interest in optical theory and modeling techniques, in particular as applied to silicon photonics and metamaterials, to work with our team to integrate existing design and simulation method(s) with AI/ML, use these new tools to design a new generation of photonic components, and finally assist with the experimental demonstration and validation of resulting devices. The ultimate goal of this work is to create AI/ML enabled computational methods that not only accelerate the photonic design process, but are capable of the autonomous discovery of non-intuitive and high-performance designs that go beyond the designer’s knowledge and intuition. We expect that this in turn will lead to new physical insights on how light interacts with integrated photonic device structures and materials.
The candidate should have a PhD degree in physics or electrical engineering.
The candidate is expected to have a strong background in photonics and be well versed in numerical simulation methods. Knowledge in optimization approaches and/or machine learning would be an asset.

Fellowships will be for two years contingent on satisfactory progress achieved during the first year.
Candidates should have obtained a PhD (or equivalent) within the past three years (PhD received on or after July 1, 2015) or expect to complete their PhD within 6 months of appointment.
The fellow will work in a collaborative team under the direct supervision of NRC researchers in machine learning and photonics.
Although preference will be given to Canadian citizens and Permanent Residents, Fellowships are open to nationals of all countries. The offer of a Fellowship does not ensure foreign nationals Permanent Residency in Canada. Non-Canadian candidates should apply for non-immigrant status (i.e. temporary status) and an employment visa. The Postdoctoral Fellowships Program is unique to the NRC. It falls under the RO/RCO classification system which uses a person-based classification system instead of the more common duties-based classification system. Candidates are remunerated based on their expertise, skill, outcomes and impacts of their previous work experience. As a guide, the current annual PhD recruiting rate is $64,437.
