Hands on processing/fabrication of optical components out of ceramics (SiC) and metal matrix composites. Develop optical component machining, grinding, and polishing processes. Conduct metrology on optical components. This position heavily focuses on metrology of fabricated optics using CMM and other techniques and experience in this area is critical. Develop material formulations and process parameters using internal and external resources for a variety of applications. Design-of-experiments (DoE) and execution of experiments. Characterization of resultant materials (microstructural, mechanical, thermal, chemical, optical etc.). Scale up of the process to produce prototypes and evaluate for form, fit, and function. Manage R&D projects, provide status reports. The R&D engineer participates in the transfer of successful development efforts from R&D to Manufacturing, specifying equipment, providing documentation, and conducting training.
Required Experience and Background
Minimum 3-5 years of hands-on experience with processing optical components, preferably SiC and non-flats
Minimum 3-5 years of hands on experience in optical component machining, polishing, and noon-flats metrology (CMM/interferometry)
Knowledge of optical systems and telescopes
Hands-on experience with processing and characterization of various materials
Design and execution of experiments
Program management, report/presentations writing experience

BS or MS in Optics, Physics, Materials Engineering, Mechanical Engineering or equivalent. Associates degree candidates with significant hands-on experience (more than 10 years) in optics processing, finishing, and metrology will also be considered.
