Overview: The Centre for Quantum Dynamics seeks a person with a strong track record in experimental quantum physics preferably with a background in ion trapping, quantum information processing, ultracold neutral atoms, or quantum optics. The successful candidate will play a key research role in the experimental Quantum Thermodynamics Program led by Dr. Erik Streed in collaboration with the theory team of Professor Joan Vaccaro.
This is a fixed term (2 years, with the possibility of extension), full time position based at the Nathan Campus.
The role: The successful candidate will be the lead experimentalist responsible for implementing a proof of concept demonstration of a Spin Heat Engine under the direction of Dr. Erik Streed. The RF will be responsible for leading the day-to-day activities in the lab. This will include the operation of an existing chip-type trapped ion quantum information processing apparatus, analysis of data, formulation of new experimental protocols, and lead authorship of manuscripts for publication in high impact scientific journals. The RF will informally supervise and coordinate the day-to-day activities of PhD candidates and advanced undergraduates (Honours and project students) associated with the project. The RF will work within the Trapped Ion research group of Dr. Erik Streed (firstname.lastname@example.org) and collaborate closely with the theory group lead by Prof. Joan Vaccaro.
The person: The candidate must have a PhD (or be post defence pending award) or postdoctoral experience in experimental quantum physics, atomic physics, laser physics, optical physics, or an equivalent relevant field with a strong record of publication. He or she must have expertise in operating frequency stabilised lasers and atom cooling/trapping. He or she must also be able to compose scientific papers for publication in international journals, work both independently and as part of a team, and have good interpersonal and communication skills. Experience with atomic ion trapping, quantum information processing, and Raman cooling is highly desirable but not essential.
The position is offered at Research Fellow level 1 or 2 (depending on experience).
Salary range: Research Fellow, Grade 2: $90,698 - $107, 706 per annum. Salary package including 17% employer superannuation contribution: $106,116 - $126, 017 per annum.
Research Fellow, Grade 1: $80,268 - $83,217 per annum. Salary package including 17% employer superannuation contribution: $93,914- $97,365 per annum.
