The position is part of a cross-functional, global team developing complex imaging hardware with integral software for image acquisition and processing, system control, and calibration. The position is responsible for assisting in bringing designs from prototype to production, with an emphasis on robust and manufacturable designs in a lean manufacturing facility. Occasional participation in detailed technical discussions with customers required. Although the location of the position is in Sterling, VA, from time to time it may be required to undertake duties at other ThorLabs locations.
Essential Job Functionsinclude the following, but are not limited to:
Develop optical designs for complex microscope systems including wide-field, confocal, and multi-photon imaging applications. Related tasks include:
Setting optical requirements and specifications
Conceptual design and optical layout
Detailed simulation and optimization using ZEMAX software tools
Work with senior team members to establish a sound system architecture across multiple product lines.
Assist in bringing new products to market, with an emphasis on robust and manufacturable designs in a lean manufacturing facility. Related tasks include:
Coordination with vendors and in-house facilities to fabricate optical elements
Hands-on prototype assembly and evaluation
Creation of technical documentation required for production
Develop and maintain product development schedules
Occasionally participate in detailed technical discussions with customers
Research and present recommendations for development of new capabilities or technologies for long-term product development.
Minimum 7 years of complex optical system design utilizing ZEMAX simulation software.
M.S. or equivalent in Optical Design
Specialized Knowledge and Skills:
Strong imaging system design, development, integration, and troubleshooting skills
Strong optics and photonics working knowledge, including imaging optics design, simulation, and implementation
Solid fundamental knowledge of microscopy techniques, in particular wide-field imaging, confocal and multiphoton laser scanning microscopes.
Hands on experience with optical metrology techniques and equipment
Expert in ZEMAX simulation software
Applied MATLAB programming
Design of key optical components for Microscopy
