Applications are invited for a Postdoctoral Research Associate (Level A)/Research Fellow (Level B) to join our research team of CUDOS - The Centre for Ultrahigh bandwidth Devices for Optical Systems, which is an Australian Research Council Centre of Excellence. CUDOS research reaches from fundamental physics to the development of fully operational photonic devices, and in particular focuses on bringing abstract metamaterial concepts to realisable guided wave geometries, with applications in telecommunications and all-optical signal processing.
You will work on fundamental aspects of metamaterials and their opto-elastic properties under the supervision of Associate Prof. Boris Kuhlmey and Prof. Martijn de Sterke, as part of a team including other researchers from the University of Sydney, Macquarie University and UTS.
You will develop the theory and modeling of opto-elastic coupling in metamaterial waveguides with the aim of enhancing opto-elastic interaction, and study novel phase matching schemes in waveguides incorporating metamaterials (both optical and acousto-optical). The work will include the development of a mathematical framework describing these phenomena, the numerical simulation of effective acoustic and optical parameters, and the analytic and numerical study of such media within waveguides. You will identify realistic structures demonstrating these enhanced effects and, in close collaboration with experimentalists, work to validate the developed models and devices in the laboratory. From time-to-time you will also be asked to contribute to the general activities of the centre.
To be successful in this position you will have: • a PhD in theoretical physics, applied mathematics or similar • a deep understanding of the theory of linear and nonlinear electromagnetism in complex media and metamaterials • demonstrated skills in complex analytic mathematical techniques and numerical modeling using a variety of methods, including finite element methods, Fourier methods and coupled mode theory • excellent oral and written communication skills • the capacity to work in a multi-skilled team comprising both theoretical and experimental scientists.
Experience with nonlinear guided optics and opto-elastic coupling is desirable. For appointment at Level B, substantive postdoctoral experience and strong evidence of independent research are also required.
The position is full-time fixed term for two years, subject to the completion of a satisfactory probation period for new appointees.
Remuneration package: up to $127K (consisting of a base salary Level A-B of $80K-$108K, leave loading and up to 17% employer’s contribution to superannuation). Level of appointment will be commensurate with experience and qualifications. Visa sponsorship and some relocation support will be provided if required.
