Provide mechanical expertise for development of precision optical instruments, including design and analysis of precision mechanisms.
Design, analyze, and prototype precision mechanisms for instruments used for optical metrology.
Document mechanical interfaces and requirements.
Integrate and test mechanical sub-systems in precision instrumentation.
Support manufacturing operations through design of custom fixtures, mounts, and test and assembly equipment.
Create/review product documentation including product specifications, drawings, bills of materials, manufacturing process documents and inspection documentation.
Create user manuals, procedures, and internal standards related to opto-mechanical systems.
Participate in design reviews and new product development activities.
Provide input on opto-mechanical systems for project planning and proposals including estimating and performance limits, development time, and cost.
Position is located in Tucson, AZ. There may be up to 10% foreign and domestic travel for training, vendor interaction and internal collaboration.
Strong foundation in standard engineering principles and techniques.
Thorough understanding of precision mechanical and opto-mechanical design principles.
Experience with mechanical and optical metrology systems.
Ability to design and assemble prototype systems consisting of optical, mechanical and electronic components.
Practical knowledge in opto-mechanical assembly, tolerancing, and alignment.
Knowledge of materials and structural modeling and optimization.
Practical experience with basic stress and thermal analysis principles.
Practical knowledge of vibration analysis and isolation/mitigation techniques.
Proficient with 3D CAD software and parametric design.
Extensive knowledge of manufacturing techniques and materials used in precision instrumentation.
Thorough understanding of GD&T
Practical machining experience desired
Experience with instrument and electronic packaging design, panel and board mounts, cabling and electronic enclosures is desired.
Experience with rapid prototyping is a plus.
Ability to work efficiently in a small team environment across multiple scientific and engineering disciplines.
M.S. or PhD in physics, mechanical engineering or related with at least 3-5 years’ experience, or B.S. in same disciplines with at least 7 years’ experience in designing and characterizing precision mechanisms.
