The Application Scientist is part of a small team that serves Chroma’s customers. They intensively interact with both end users and OEM customers answering technical questions, solving problems, and providing quotes. This involves everything from trouble-shooting optics to experimental design, helping with research and development to strategic business development. In addition our Application Scientists educate others both internally and externally via presentations at conferences, lectures, and technical talks.
Share responsibility with the sales department for technical support, both by phone and e-mail, for all Chroma and 89 North products.
Offer specialized customer support in areas of concentration, including optics, microscopy, spectroscopy, fluorescence, sensing, etc.
Work with specific OEM groups to initiate, develop and maintain the connections as needed.
Send quotes/pricing for ‘custom’ optics, required for specialized applications or new instrumentations; engage into sales and strategic planning, aiming at promoting the business while meeting customers’ needs.
Stay current on the latest advances in the technology of fluorescence, optics, microscopy, flow cytometry, and other optical instrumentations.
Travel to customer sites/labs to reinforce communication as well as see (and/or trouble-shoot) equipment.
Travel to meetings as a representative of Chroma to offer presentations and trainings.
Interface with scientific community (academic & industrial) regarding both general and specific requirement for optics. Coordinate with Chroma and staff for the most effective/economical solutions to maximize product performance. This includes designs (optics) for new applications and/or the latest equipment.
Write technical notes/application notes/information regarding area of expertise as it applies to Chroma/optics, etc. for in-house, web site, and external publications.

Minimum of a Masters in related field (Biology, Bioengineering, Optics, Physics or Microscopy) Significant related lab experience in fluorescence microscopy, optics and imaging. PhD preferred.
Good customer service skills, with customer service experience preferred.
Excellent verbal and writing skills.
Fluent in both English and Chinese
Ability to travel, on average, four weeks per quarter.
