Optical Scientist/Engineer Level IV - Location: Newark, CA
Headquartered in Newark, CA, Triple Ring Technologies is an innovative technology and product development company that partners with clients to deliver complete solutions from conceptual design through product launch. Our highly interdisciplinary team includes senior professionals from industry, finance, and academia, with extensive experience in medical device, life science, clean tech, security, and industrial technologies.
The full-time Level III-IV Scientist/Engineer will take on a key role within our advanced R&D effort. The Optical Technologies group encompasses both science and engineering efforts, as described below. Our members are responsible for the ultimate technical success of a project, from concept development through feasibility demonstration and from engineering prototypes through productization.
In this role you will work in project teams ranging from 2 to 20 people as a project manager, technical lead, or technical contributor, depending on the project and available staffing. You will work to design optical instrumentation, interpret data, create models, develop algorithms, initiate and oversee laboratory experiments, prepare reports, and communicate the results of your work to the client. You will contribute to a variety of efforts across multiple technical disciplines ranging from short (concept development, data analysis) to long (taking a concept through product development) efforts. The ability to prioritize and manage effectively will be key to your success.
This position will report to the Director, Optical Technologies.
Understand light transport through tissue and develop algorithms to account for influence of tissue optical properties
Run Monte Carlo simulations using Triple Ring’s proprietary code to parameterize models
Calculate photon budgets to estimate key performance factors
Design and build feasibility systems, perform bench testing
Present findings to Client and manage Client expectations
Develop protocols, manage IACUC and/or IRB submissions, and attend animal and/or human studies

Translate client/user requirements to coherent set of system requirements
Design, build, and test optical subsystems to meet defined requirements or find limits of performance; develop detailed mathematical models for optical performance
Interact with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to negotiate tradeoffs and define appropriate system partitioning to meet overall performance, schedule, and cost targets
Write requirements for optical subsystems. Work with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to ensure that corresponding requirements for those subsystems are defined.
Oversee optical design consultants using commercial software such as Zemax
Define verification test procedures
Perform eye and skin safety calculations to ensure that optical systems meet appropriate safety standards
Perform hands-on lab work to integrate subsystems, bring up and debug prototype optical instruments
